Ever wondered how decisions are made in the corridors of power at the
House of Commons in London?
If you are aged between 13 and 19,
or 13 to 25 if you have additional needs, Peterborough City
Council’s young people’s service is giving you the chance to find
out more about local politics during Local Democracy Week (15 to 21
October 2007).
Council Leader John Peach,
Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet members Councillor Matthew
Dalton, Councillor Graham Murphy, Councillor Matthew Lee, The Mayor
of Peterborough Councillor Marion Todd, Peterborough MP Stewart
Jackson and Councillors David Raines, Janet Goodwin and David Thorpe
have all agreed to be shadowed during the week as part of a packed
programme of events organised by the young people’s service.
To be in with a chance of shadowing
one of Peterborough’s politicians all you have to do is contact
youth worker Alice Johnson on 01733 707986 or 07920 160128 or email
alice.johnson@peterborough.gov.uk
Councillor Matthew Dalton, spokesman
for young people, said: “Peterborough’s young people are the future
of our city and it is really important that they get involved now to
help shape the Peterborough they and their families will live and
work in for many years to come.
“Local Democracy Week provides a
fantastic opportunity to have a closer look at how decisions are
made in Peterborough and why it is important that all people
including teenagers use their vote and get involved in local
politics.”
Locality manager for Peterborough
City Council’s young people’s service, Javed Ahmed, said: “We are
looking for young people from all across Peterborough to put pen to
paper and enter our competition. You could be given the chance to go
up to the House of Commons in London, interview the city council’s
leader or find out what it is like to be Mayor for a day.”
Peterborough City Council’s young
people’s service was formed in April following the merger of
Connexions and the youth service. It offers a free and confidential
support service for all 13 to 19 year olds in the city and young
people with additional needs up to the age of 25.
It enables young people to access a
range of positive, productive activities and support, information,
advice and guidance to contribute to their successful personal and
social development and reach their full potential.
