Peterborough residents can dispose of
their excess Christmas and New Year waste and separated recycling
materials when city council refuse and recycling lorries visit four
drop-off locations around the city on Saturday (6 January).
Collections on Saturday will be held
at the Lawson Avenue car park, Stanground, Peterborough, from 8 am
to 9.30 am; Park Lane car park in Eastfield, Peterborough, from 10
am to 11.30 am; Christ Church car park, Dogsthorpe, Peterborough,
from 12 noon to 1.30 pm; and the Rainbow Centre, Werrington,
Peterborough, from 2 pm to 3.30 pm.
"Three million tonnes of extra waste
is produced over the Christmas holidays which can end up at landfill
sites," said Peterborough City Council's waste and recycling
officer, Holly Beckett. "This damages the environment because
landfill generates a quarter of the UK's methane gas emissions,
which contribute to global warming.
"Most of the extra waste created
during the festive period including card, paper, television guides,
newspapers, plastic bottles, food and drinks cans, and juice and
milk cartons can be recycled. The eight additional sites, which will
complement the normal service, will help people recycle as much of
this additional waste as possible."
Residents can also take additional
waste to the householders recycling centre in Dogsthorpe and are
reminded that collections of the brown bin service for organic
garden waste will resume on Tuesday 6 February.
Glass bottles and jars should be
taken to the one of more than 30 bottle banks across the city.
