Seeding Sustainable Communities Conference

News | Community

A project carried out by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) has been dubbed the ‘blueprint for sustainable behaviour change’ for its achievements in encouraging sustainable living amongst households in the City.

PECT is now holding a conference on 13th March 2008 in Peterborough, to spotlight the work being carried out, and to disseminate the project findings for the benefit of other regions.

The conference celebrates the conclusion of a three year pilot project carried out by PECT which achieved 100% behaviour change amongst residents in new housing developments in Peterborough.

The project carried out 950 doorstep visits to homes in Hampton and the Sugar Way estate inspiring residents to make changes.

One of only 35 Defra Environmental Action Fund projects, the pilot has attracted interest from across the UK and has been dubbed the ‘blueprint for behaviour change’.

Project Manager Isabel del Burgo says, ‘The conference will explore all the key themes surrounding developing the communities of the future, including the latest on zero-carbon homes, legislation and planning policy, cutting edge innovation in behaviour change, community cohesion, good neighbouring, and how to achieve sustainable living on the ground.’

The latest confirmed speaker for the event is TV’s green queen Penney Poyzer. She joins Tony Juniper, noted environmental campaigner, journalist, and Director of Friends of the Earth alongside representatives from Opportunity Peterborough, English Partnerships, Government Office for the East of England, Bath University, Anglian Water, Bio-Regional, and Futerra.

Chief Executive of PECT Hugh Cripps explains, ‘this conference puts Peterborough centre stage as we showcase the innovative work being carried out. Truly Sustainable Communities are about both the physical infrastructure and the social fabric of a place; our project works to ensure local residents have a developed sense of community spirit, high standards of living, and low environmental impact.’
