Mr Jackson was disappointed
in a response from the Home Office, they outlined that they could
not enforce the display of either the Union Flag, or a portrait of
Her Majesty the Queen, at entry points to the UK.
In America, by presidential
proclamation, the flag of the United States is one of the first
things seen and is flown at every Customs Port of Entry which is
continually open. Yet, in Britain, there is no such provision set
out in law.
Stewart Jackson MP said: "The Union
Flag is one of the most powerful and illustrious symbols of
Britishness - of social and national unity - and I cannot fathom why
the Home Office would not wish to display it with pride at entry
points to the UK. "
"This is yet another example of
political correctness and cumbersome bureaucracy undermining British
identity."
"Following the success of the recent
Royal Wedding and with the Olympics coming up, I believe we should
relish in the symbols of our nation and our nation's history. The
British Flag and our Sovereign act as a focus for our national
identity and should welcome all those who are returning to, or
visiting our country."
