The Peterborough City
Council area had 81.2 births per 1000 women aged 15-44 during 2009.
This is way ahead of the Cambridgeshire (59.5) and East of England
(63.7) averages. The rate in Cambridge was only 44.2.
Furthermore, statistics for 2008
show that 37% of live births in the Peterborough City Council area
were to mothers born outside the UK.
Stewart commented: “These figures
are quite shocking.
“For anyone to claim now that there
isn’t pressure on public services is sticking their head in the
sand.
“We have the tenth highest birth
rate in the country with over one third being born to foreign born
mothers.
“Immigration is clearly driving up
the local birth rate and local public services are now close to
breaking point. The new Government must take these issues seriously
and I will be seeking a meeting very soon with the new Immigration
Minister, Damian Green MP.”
Note - The General Fertility Rate (GFR)
is the number of live births per 1,000 women aged 15-44
