MP supports National Childbirth Trusts campaign

News | Community

Local MP Stewart Jackson has given his support to the National Childbirth Trust’s (NCT) campaign to give mothers more choice in the location and conditions of their birthing experience after an NCT report showing that 95% of women currently live in areas where they do not have the ability to choose how their child is born- whether it is a home birth, in a birth centre or in obstetric units.

The NCT have found that the number of women in the UK who were given the choice of where to give birth is a mere 4.2%- the NCT are now campaigning to raise this to 100%. The choices made should be based upon full, unbiased information in an accessible format and we must be assured that there are the correct facilities in place to fulfil the mother’s needs. The NCT argue that it is important that parents-to-be have this sense of control and the optimal amount of confidence in the entire process.

Stewart commented “What is vital is not the decision made, but that that expecting parents are given enough information about the options available in order to make an educated decision.”

“In such a stressful and joyous time it is vital that the mother (and father) be as happy and relaxed as possible, in the surroundings of their choice.”

Stewart Jackson was elected in May 2005 to represent the Peterborough constituency in the House of Commons. To find out more about him, his views and activities, visit his website at www.stewartjackson.org.uk
