Jackson outraged by government's treatment of police

News | Community

Local MP Stewart Jackson has expressed his sense of outrage at the way the police have been treated so dishonourably by the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith.

Mr Jackson has been deluged with letters from serving police officers in his constituency over the last few days all expressing their disappointment at the refusal of Ms Smith to accept the Independent Police Arbitration Panel’s recommendation of a 2.5% pay rise.

Mr Jackson believes that police officers behaved very properly in agreeing to abide by the decision of the Independent Police Arbitration Panel – whatever that decision was – and is quite shocked that the Government has reneged on that agreement.

The services of our policemen and women are valued for their courage and bravery, for their willingness to tackle violent crime, including gun and knife crime, for the reassurance they offer the public and this year, in particular, their incredible response to the flooding in which many officers without hesitation performed above and beyond the call of duty.

Stewart commented: “Jacqui Smith has shown disrespect verging on contempt for the police. The panel recommended 2.5%, but she made a cynical deal with the Chancellor to cut that to 1.9% by not paying the increase for September, October or November

“Local officers can be sure that I and the Shadow Home Affairs Team will continue to press ministers on this matter in Parliament.”
