The original estimate for the construction of Olympic Park and other
regeneration expenditure in East London was £2.35 billion – but has
now risen to an estimated £9 billion or more.
He has signed an Early Day Motion in
the House of Commons to highlight the issue.
The Lottery is already funding a
large share of the cost of the event (£1.5 billion) and further
demands will have a potentially big impact on the charity and
voluntary sector.
Stewart commented: “Any further cost
overruns will mean the Government agreeing to a bigger raid on
Lottery funding previously available for good causes. This may have
a major impact on charity work and volunteering.
Local charities like ASBAH will be
effectively be taxed to finance the Olympic Games in London. This is
unfair and the Treasury needs to make sure costs are kept under
control and charities across the UK are not penalised.”
