Last week teams from Peterborough City Council cleaned 229 streets,
removing 420 items of graffiti, collecting 15,640kg of litter and
rubbish, and towing away four untaxed vehicles. This compares with
163 items of graffiti removed in the first week of 2009's Spring
Clean, and 8,340kg of rubbish from 224 streets.
Councillor
Matthew Lee, deputy leader of the city council and cabinet member
for environment capital, said: "The Spring Clean is an important
initiative in our bid to make Peterborough the UK's greenest city.
Our hard-working staff have done a brilliant job in the areas they
have visited so far. I look forward to hearing of more successes as
the operation continues."
Mark
Horsley, the city council's senior street scene officer, said: "This
is a really positive start to this year's Spring Clean and we will
be endeavouring to improve on last year's efforts as the campaign
continues. Spring Clean is part of our ongoing work to make
Peterborough a much cleaner pleasant environment in which all our
residents are proud to live."
