Keep recycling this New Year

News | Community

The Christmas and New Year festivities are over and the decorations packed away for next year, but what can you do with the left over waste?

Peterborough City Council is urging residents to think before they throw and consider which items can be recycled.

Empty metal tins which once held sweets or biscuits can be put in the green recycling bin, along with wrapping paper, Christmas cards and unused cardboard boxes, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, paper, cans, cartons and aerosols.

Marks and Spencer and WHSmith are accepting Christmas cards for recycling to raise funds for the Woodland Trust. Please visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk for more information.

Catalogues can also be recycled in the green bin, although if you want to recycle your old Next directory then you should tear off the laminated outer covers because the plasticised finish prevents the card from being recycled. You can then recycle the inner pages.

Kirsty Martin, the city council's senior engagement officer, said: "There is always a great deal of excess left over after the festive season and people might not think that some of this could be recycled, for example empty sweet tins and mail order catalogues.

"We would urge people to stop and think before they put something in the bin and if they are not sure then check that the item has a recycling logo or call the city council on (01733) 747474.
