Personal Safety logo competition

News | Community

The SaferPeterborough partnership is inviting young people to design a logo and contribute ideas to a personal safety page created for them on social networking websites Facebook and Bebo.

 Safer Peterborough

Launching in August 2009, the 'Safe About Town' profile pages will provide young people with information about personal safety and a place to voice concerns they may have about keeping safe in their communities.

The online area will also give young people the opportunity to display creative work and share information on music, hobbies and city events. In addition, users will be able to suggest ideas on what they think would make Peterborough a better place for them to enjoy their free time and a safer place for young people to live.

Staff from the community safety team at Cambridgeshire Constabulary will be introducing Safe About Town to schools and inviting young people to design a logo that reflects a personal safety theme. The young person behind the chosen design will win £50 and get to spend the day with the police dog section and air support unit.

The competition is open until Friday 24 July 2009 and the winning design will be announced in August ahead of the Safe About Town launch.

Sarah Edwards, from the police community safety team, said: "Young people can be vulnerable targets for crime with items such as mobile phones and iPods often being stolen from them. Safe About Town will provide them with theft prevention advice and information about keeping safe and their well-being. Users will be able to talk to one another online and add photos and information as well as suggest to us new additions to the page.

"Safe About Town will help target specific messages to young people and strengthen links with them across organisations that make up the SaferPeterborough partnership. Students at several schools have already submitted designs and a team of young artists from Peterborough City Council's young people's service are also getting creative with what they think the logo should look like."

Schools and young people interested in Safe About Town and anyone wanting to enter the competition should contact Sarah Edwards on 01733 424493 or email sarah.edwards@cambs.pnn.police.uk
