The office building – constructed on the site of a former Corn
Exchange – has six tenants, most notably the city’s main Post Office
Counters outlet, whose tenure expires in December 2008. Other uses
include an estate agent, off-licence and a Peterborough Regional
College training facility.
Council Leader Councillor John Peach
said: “The purchase is in line with our aim to make the city centre
more attractive to residents and visitors.
"Some
people, notably members of Peterborough Civic Society, have
advocated demolishing the building to create additional open space
around the adjoining St John’s Church and to complement Cathedral
Square.
“However, we have responsibilities
to all our residents and we will consult widely before preparing
recommendations and a planning application for the future of the
Corn Exchange.”
