Residents are being urged to attend the first meetings of the seven neighbourhood councils which begin on Monday 12 October 2009 to coincide with Local Democracy Week.

The neighbourhood councils will develop community action plans in consultation with the public to tackle issues specific to those streets and neighbourhoods. The councils will also have some delegated powers to enable them to decide how funding is spent in their area and will also act as consultees on planning and licensing applications.

Councillor Marco Cereste, Leader of Peterborough City Council, said: "The new neighbourhood councils are a way of giving residents and local councillors more say on how issues are dealt with in their own communities and how some of the funding allocated for their neighbourhood will be spent.

"We want to ensure all our residents and all communities have the opportunity to comment on the decisions which will ultimately affect them to enable them to play an active role shaping the future of Peterborough."

The neighbourhood councils are split into three distinct geographical areas: central and east; south, and north and west.

The three neighbourhood council chairmen are councillor Janet Goodwin for South, councillor Yvonne Lowndes for Central and East and councillor Pat Nash for North and West.

The neighbourhood council meetings will take place as follows:

  • South 1, which covers Stanground East, Stanground Central and Fletton wards, will meet at Stanground College, Peterborough Road, Stanground, on Monday 12 October 2009 at 7pm.

  • Central and East 1, which covers Central and North wards, will meet at the John Clare Theatre at Central Library, Broadway, Peterborough, on Tuesday 13 October 2009 at 7pm.

  • North and West 2, which covers Werrington North, Werrington South, Paston and Walton wards, will meet at Ken Stimpson Community School, Staniland Way, Werrington, Peterborough, on Thursday 15 October 2009 at 7pm.

  • North and West 1, which covers Northborough, Barnack, Glinton and Wittering, Newborough, and Eye and Thorney wards, will meet at Northborough Primary School, Church Street, Northborough, on Monday 19 October 2009 at 7pm.

  • South 2, which covers Orton with Hampton, Orton Longueville and Orton Waterville wards, will meet at Bushfield Sports Centre, Orton Centre, Peterborough, on Tuesday 20 October 2009 at 7pm.

  • North and West 3, which covers Bretton North, Bretton South, West and Ravensthorpe wards, will meet at Jack Hunt School, Ledbury Road, Peterborough, on Wednesday 21 October 2009 at 7pm.

  • Central and East 2, which covers Park, Dogsthorpe and East wards, will meet at Newark Hill School, Newark Avenue, Peterborough, on Tuesday 3 November 2009 at 7pm.

Julie Rivett, Peterborough City Council’s neighbourhoods and empowerment manager, said: “We hope lots of local residents and businesses will come along to the first neighbourhood council meetings to find out more about them and how they can get involved.

“There will be the chance for everyone who attends the meetings to take part and express their views and get involved in decision making at a local level.”
