Donation helps fund new Flag Fen centre

News | Community

Plans to build a 500,000 archaeological resource centre at the Flag Fen bronze age site in Peterborough are moving ahead thanks to a generous 10,000 donation from the Peter Boizot Foundation.

Peterborough entrepreneur and owner of the Great Northern Hotel, Peter Boizot, has supported Flag Fen for a number of years and has donated 25,000 over the past ten years to fund excavations at the site.

The donation will help fund a much needed purpose-built facility to enable archaeologists to analyse material excavated at the site. The building will also be used to host workshops and training sessions.

Georgia Butters, general manager at Flag Fen, said: "It's fantastic that we are receiving these funds to enable us to proceed with this project. This will be a wonderful research facility providing numerous opportunities for Peterborough."

The Peter Boizot Foundation was set up in 1996 to fund good causes in the Peterborough area. Since the foundation was set up donations have been made to various organisations including the Peterborough Cathedral Trust, King's School and the Woodland Trust.

"Flag Fen is a very worthwhile organisation and the foundation holds it in great esteem," said Mr Boizot. "As well as being a fantastic visitor attraction, the archaeologists on site have a very interesting and important role and need facilities to support this.

"The Peter Boizot Foundation supports a number of great projects in and around Peterborough of which Flag Fen is one. I have supported excavations and new projects at the site for a number of years and the new facility will be a very exciting new addition at the centre."
