The letter or email usually states it is from a government official who needs help transferring money from overseas.

Peterborough Trading Standards offers the following advice:-

  • Do not be tempted to reply to this type of letter or e-mail

  • Never give your bank details by e-mail, telephone or letter to someone you do not know

  • Be very sceptical Ė if something looks too good to be true it usually is

  • If in doubt ask for advice Ė contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06

  • You can forward the email to [email protected]

  • You can also contact the service provider from where the e-mail originated to report this type of e-mail

  • Delete the e-mail and throw away any letters
