Chefs from five Peterborough
restaurants competed for the title ‘Peterborough Curry Chef of the
Year’ on 5 September and it was Mohammed Abdul Hakim, from Donner &
Balti Express on Lincoln Road, who was crowned curry king for the
third year successive year.
The competition was organised by
Peterborough City Council’s environmental health food team at
Peterborough Regional College. The five chefs had 60 minutes to
prepare and serve a curry, complementary side dish and a bread or
rice dish. The dishes were then judged on appearance, aroma, texture
and taste.
Scores for the meals were combined with marks awarded by food safety
officers based on food safety and hygiene assessments at each chef's
restaurant kitchens to select the overall winner. Restaurant
evaluations covered issues such as kitchen cleanliness, food
storage, personal hygiene, level of training and food temperature
monitoring.
After the scores were added up, it
was announced Mr Hakim had successively defended his crown and was
awarded the prestigious title of ‘Peterborough Curry Chef of the
Year 2006’ and a trophy. However, the Lincoln Road restaurant owner
said he would be hanging up his apron and giving somebody else a
chance to win the coveted title next year.
The five chefs were: Mohammed Abdul
Hakim, from Donner & Balti Express, on Lincoln Road; Kham Bahadur
Chhetri, from The Indian Chef, on Lincoln Road; Mohammed Manir from
Ali’s Balti House, on Bourges Boulevard; Sajda Andleeb from Food For
All Your Occasions, on Percival Street; and Supakorn Masuntia from
The Brewery Tap.
Jenny Clare, food safety officer at
Peterborough City Council, said: “I would like to congratulate all
the chefs who took part in this year’s competition. They all did
extremely well and displayed high standards in food preparation,
kitchen hygiene and of course great food.”
The judges were: Nigel Thornton,
deputy editor at the Peterborough Evening Telegraph; Deputy Mayor of
Peterborough Councillor Marion Todd; Andrew Gillard from
Peterborough Regional College; Councillor Graham Murphy,
Peterborough City Council member for Environment and Community
Safety; Jane Smith from BBC Radio Cambridgeshire; and Zaheda Khanam,
who won her place on the panel in a competition published in the
July edition of the city council’s ‘Your Peterborough’ newspaper.
