If you are a taxpayer in the city council area and do not receive
your bill by 25 March 2011 then you should contact the council tax
team on (01733) 452258. For many council tax payers the first
instalment for 2011/12 is due on 1 April 2011, and without a bill
there is a chance that you could fall behind with payments.
When you
receive your bill, you should check for the following:
-
That
your name is correct.
-
The
bill shows the name of everyone in your household that is liable
for paying council tax.
-
The
bill shows any discounts that you are likely to claim - for
example residents living alone are eligible for a 25 per cent
discount. Discounts are not given automatically, you will need
to apply to the council.
-
The
bill does not show any discount to which you are not entitled.
You must notify the council if your circumstances or the people
in your household change and you will be re-billed if there are
discounts showing that are not applicable to you.
-
That
the bill shows the correct method of payment, for example direct
debit.
Any
changes in circumstances or to your address that have been submitted
to the council since 22 February 2011 may not have been processed in
time to be included in this bill. In these cases, an amended bill
will be sent out in the next two to three weeks which will show the
amount of council tax due and a revised instalment payment schedule.
Shirley
Pleszkan, the city council's head of shared transactional services,
said: "It is really important that tax payers check their bills when
they arrive to ensure that they are paying the correct amount and
that the council has all their correct details.
"If you
are having trouble making your council tax payments, then please let
us know as soon as you can. We will do everything we can to help,
and in some cases there may be benefits or discounts that you are
entitled to that could reduce the amount of council tax you need to
pay. Don't get into trouble - talk to us."
