Compost Awareness Week aims to encourage more people to recognise the
benefits of home composting. Great results can be achieved by using
peat-free composts containing recycled materials in the garden and
residents who order their compost bin during Compost Awareness Week
could win £100 of gardening vouchers.
“As a nation we produce around 30
million tonnes of rubbish each year and over half of this waste can
be easily recycled,” said Rebecca Jackson, waste minimisation and
composting officer. “In fact, over one third of the contents of an
average UK household dustbin can be home composted, not to mention
all the garden waste that can be added to a compost bin. Yet many
people still do not recognise how important and simple this is to
do.”
As part of composting week, the
council will be holding roadshows from 10 am to 4 pm at Notcutts
Garden Centre, Oundle Road, in Orton Waterville, on bank holiday
Monday (7 May) and outside the Town Hall on Wednesday (9 May), to
raise awareness about the benefits of home composting and offer
advice on how to get started.
Home composting is a natural way of
recycling and you can compost lots of items of household rubbish you
would normally through away for landfill such as garden waste, fruit
and vegetable peelings, egg shells and tea bags.
Not only can this waste be turned
into an excellent, and free, soil conditioner for your garden but it
is one of the best ways in which we can all help to reduce the waste
we are producing.
It is now easier than ever to start
composting as Peterborough City Council is part of the national WRAP
composting scheme and residents can buy a home composting unit from
as little as £8, including delivery.
