Home Office role beckons for council employee

News | Community

Peterborough City Council’s community safety manager Christine Graham is to join the Home Office at the end of June on a 12-month secondment where her expertise and experience will be utilised by the government’s tackling violent crime team.

She will be based in Cambridge at the Government Office for the East of England (GO-East).

In her new role she will support local partnerships around the country, which are trying to reduce violent crime. Christine’s appointment will specifically relate to alcohol-related violent crime and domestic violence.

“I’m very excited to have been given this opportunity to widen my experience and work with other partnerships around the country,” said Christine. “However, I must admit I’m naturally nervous in embarking on this new role. It will involve undertaking a lot of work in some areas which are very different from those I have been dealing with on a day-to-day basis at the city council. It will, however, mean that the experience gained in this new role will ultimately be very beneficial to the local authority and Peterborough residents.

On a personal level, I will be sad to say goodbye to so many friends and colleagues I have made during the past 10 years at the city council. I joined the community safety team around nine years ago and it continues to play a vital role in a wide range of areas.”

The community safety team is responsible for co-ordinating a multi agency response in a number of areas, including anti-social behaviour, hate crime, domestic violence, vehicle crime and arson.

In addition, it works in partnership with many other agencies, including Cambridgeshire Constabulary, National Probation Service, Drug Action Team, Youth Offending Service, HMP Peterborough and Victim Support.

Mike Brown, head of environmental and public protection services at the city council, said: “We are sorry to lose Christine for the next 12-months. She is a valued member of staff and her hard work has resulted in the delivery of a first-class service to Peterborough residents. The fact that she is joining the Home Office is testament to her commitment and dedication as community safety manager at the city council.”
