In addition to the environmental and cost advantages of car-sharing,
the college will reserve eight parking spaces for people who are
members of a car-share group. More spaces will be reserved in
response to demand.
The schemes – one for staff and the
other for students – will be launched on Monday (11 September) when
members of Peterborough City Council’s Travelchoice team will be
promoting the benefits of the initiative.
Staff and students will be able to
use dedicated access facilities on the student and staff intranet to
search for other staff members and students, who make similar
journeys between home and college.
City council travel plan coordinator
Nicola Francis said: “Hundreds of people are already benefiting from
car sharing. The system is especially effective for people who
travel to the same location – such as a big office or college – at
fixed times on specific days.
“People don’t have to be car owners
to sign-up nor do they have to commit to sharing every day. Sharing
just one day a week will reduce congestion and result in money
savings. Furthermore, every car share arrangement will result in at
least one more vehicle being taken off the road during peak periods,
reducing congestion and air pollution.

College health and safety assistant
Sam Langfield, who helped set up the scheme, added: “Car sharing
makes sense from many perspectives, especially for students who have
limited income and sometimes need to travel some distance to attend
college each day.
“With 3,500 full time students,
12,000 part time students and 713 staff using the college, the
introduction of these car share schemes should offer significant
benefits.”
