Repair work for three city bridges

News | Community

Work to repair and strengthen three bridges on the A1139 Frank Perkins Parkway has started this month.

Peterborough City Council is preparing to carry out resurfacing and waterproofing work on the Nene Bridge, Bishops Road Bridge and the Fletton Underbridge. The work, which is due to commence on 16 May 2009, will also see bearings and central reservation barriers replaced, and beams repaired and painted.

Every effort will be made to keep traffic disruption to a minimum, however a 40mph speed limit and lane closures will be required for safety reasons. During daylight hours only one lane will be closed at any one time. Occasional full closures of the parkway will be required at night.

David Farquhar, head of environment, transport and engineering for Peterborough City Council, said: "The three bridges are large dual carriageway structures which carry the A1139 over Bishops Road, the River Nene, the Peterborough to March railway line and Whittlesey Road.

"Since their construction in the early 1980s, the condition of the structures has deteriorated, and we need to take remedial action now to put this right.

"All three bridges are located within a relatively short stretch of the A1139 and it makes sense to carry out the work at the same time, rather than having three separate periods of lane closures."

To take maximum advantage of the closures, lighting maintenance and street cleansing work will also be carried out, preventing further disruption in the future.

Warning signs notifying motorists of potential delays will be put in place two weeks before work commences. It is expected that the repairs will be completed by the end of October.
