Christmas bin collections

People are reminded that refuse and recycling dates over the festive period will change for most households.

Collections will continue on the normal weekly schedule. However, residents who would have had a service on Monday 25 December will instead have their bins collected two days earlier on Saturday 23 December.

The remaining collections during the holiday period will be collected a day later than usual, while brown bin collections will be suspended from Friday 15 December until Tuesday 6 February 2007.

Residents will also be able to dispose of their Christmas waste and separated recycling at eight additional sites over the Christmas period. On Saturday 30 December, refuse and recycling lorries will collect household waste and festive wrapping, card, plastic bottles and other recyclable materials from the Copeland Centre in Bretton, Peterborough between 8 am and 9.30 am.

The lorries will then visit the Orton Centre car park in Orton Goldhay, Peterborough from 10 am to 11.30 am; Hampton Court in Ravensthorpe, Peterborough from 12 noon to 1.30 pm; and the Pyramid Centre car park in North Bretton, Peterborough from 2 pm to 3.30 pm.

The lorries for excess refuse and recycling will also make collections on Saturday 6 January 2007 from the car park in Lawson Avenue, Stanground, Peterborough from 8 am to 9.30 am; Park Lane car park in Eastfield, Peterborough from 10 am to 11.30 am; Christ Church car park, Dogsthorpe, Peterborough from 12 noon to 1.30 pm and the Rainbow Centre, Werrington, Peterborough from 2 pm to 3.30pm.

“Three million tonnes of extra waste is produced over the Christmas holidays which can end up at landfill sites,” said Peterborough City Council’s waste and recycling officer, Holly Beckett. “This is damaging the environment as landfill is responsible for a quarter of the UK’s methane gas emissions, which contributes to global warming.

“Most of the extra waste created during the festive period can be recycled and, while residents in Peterborough are some of the greenest in the UK, it’s important we continue to do our bit for the environment this Christmas. The eight additional sites, which will complement the normal three-bin service, will help people recycle as much of this additional waste as possible. Residents can also deposit additional waste to the householders recycling centre in Dogsthorpe to and excess recyclables to bring sites across the city.”

Card, paper, television guides, newspapers, plastic bottles, food and drinks cans, as well as juice and milk cartons, can be deposited in green bins for recycling.

Glass bottles and jars should be taken to the nearest bottle bank of which there are more than 30 across the city.
