The boundary of the new area will run along Bourges Boulevard to the
Embankment and Potter’s Way to the Boongate roundabout. It will
continue along Boongate and up Eastfield Road to the junction of
Newark Avenue.
A separate area will include
Eastfield Cemetery and the area around Newark Hill Primary School.
Newark Avenue will mark the northern boundary, with it continuing
south along Garton End Road, Park Road and on to Huntly Grove. That
area will enclose Central Park, Deacon’s School and Peterborough
Regional College. The boundary will then continue along Huntly Grove
to Green Lane and Taverner’s Road, before finally joining up with
Bourges Boulevard again at the roundabout at Westwood Bridge.
Katy Softley, community team leader
at Peterborough City Council, said: “This extension to the current
Designated Public Place Order will help tackle public drunkeness and
associated anti-social behaviour. However, the order does not
prevent people from drinking in the designated area outside licensed
premises such as beer gardens or in their own gardens.
“If somebody continues to drink in
the area when asked not to do so by a police officer they may be
arrested and fined £500 if convicted. The police can also arrest
anyone failing to surrender alcohol in the area when asked to do
so.”
Councillors voted in favour of
making a Designated Public Place Order (DPPO), under the Criminal
Justice and Police Act 2001, to prevent the consumption of alcohol
in public in the proposed areas at a meeting of the full council on
Wednesday 11 April. It will be advertised in the local press before
coming into force on Thursday 17 May.
