Individuals interested in signing-up for the half-marathon or
wanting to help out on the day have until Thursday (11 October) to
get involved. More than 3,000 runners took to the streets of
Peterborough to participate in either the half-marathon or the 5km
fun run in 2006. Thousands more lined the 13.1-mile route to cheer
on those taking part in what was the largest race of its kind in the
eastern region. However, race organisers want to give everybody the
opportunity to help make this year’s event even bigger and better.
“This is an excellent opportunity to
be involved in one of the biggest sporting events in the region,”
said race organiser Kathleen McGrath from Peterborough City Council.
“We want to build on the success of last year’s race and give people
the opportunity to get involved in the Great Eastern Run.”
An army of volunteers are required
on race day from 9 am in the morning until the race finishes. It is
an excellent opportunity to be part of the greatest race in the
east, receive a free limited edition Great Eastern Run 2007 fleece
and a souvenir T-shirt.
Marshals must be aged 16 years and
over. Volunteers will be responsible for manning the route and
communicating with runners and the public. Groups to help out at
water stations are especially in demand.
They will be fully briefed and will
be working alongside Cambridgeshire Police and city council
employees to maintain the safety of everyone involved.

The Great Eastern Run has grown with
the backing of its main sponsor Perkins Engines and others,
including Advance Performance, ASICS UK Ltd and Anglian Water. It
has also benefited from the enthusiasm of local running clubs,
giving the sport the support it deserves as well as helping runners
of all abilities.
