The Great Eastern Run is delighted to announce a Great Eastern Running Expo is to be held on Sunday 1 July at the Holiday Inn, West, Thorpe Wood, in Peterborough.

The biggest running event of its kind in the region has joined forces with England Athletics East to deliver a fantastic day of activities, advice and information for runners of all abilities for free.

Great Eastern Run 2007

“The Great Eastern Run is being held on Sunday 14 October and the Expo is one of the many ways runners can prepare for the race,” said race director Neil Levine. “In addition, it will provide the ideal opportunity for anyone new to the sport to get the best information and advice possible on a wide variety of running issues. Whether you’re an experienced runner or a complete novice we would love to see you.”

The Great Eastern Run has grown with the backing of its main sponsor Perkins Engines and others, including Advance Performance, ASICS UK Ltd, and Premier Kitchens and Bedrooms. It has also benefited from the enthusiasm of local running clubs, giving the sport the support it deserves as well as helping runners of all abilities.

The Great Eastern Running Expo will be held from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday 1 July, with guest speakers Bud Baldero, Britain’s marathon team coach. In addition, one of Britain’s greatest ever 400-metre athletes Derek Redmond, who won world, European and Commonwealth gold medals and is now a motivational speaker, will also be at the event.

Chris Jones, regional manager for England Athletics East said: “Liam Cain, Paul Evans and I have been working with Peterborough City Council and Samantha Hale of Advance Performance to plan these extra events to meet the needs of our athletes. This is a really exciting development and we are thrilled that Bud Baldero and Derek Redmond have agreed to speak at the Great Eastern Running Expo.”

The day will be divided into three elements: a training event to which elite athletes have been invited; a workshop programme for club runners; and a training session designed for novice runners. In addition, local athletics clubs will be available to advise on preparation and training programmes, and encouraging people to sign up for the half-marathon. By choosing to sign-up for the race at this event, runners will have more than three months to prepare for the race which will take place in the city on Sunday 14 October.

Experts will also be on hand at the Great Eastern Running Expo to give advice on safe training, sensible nutrition, dealing with injuries, and choosing suitable footwear and kit. There will also be representatives from local running clubs and a number of charities that people may wish to run for. It is all designed to give people the support and information they need to prepare for the race. For novices, there will be informal workshops and the opportunity to warm up, followed by a short practical session and stretching.

After the Great Eastern Running Expo, novice runners will be able to benefit from two evening training runs each month until the Great Eastern Run on 14 October, all starting from the Peterborough Holiday Inn at 7 pm. The first organised training run will be held on Wednesday 11 July. Further sessions will follow on 25 July, 8 and 22 August, 5 and 19 September and finally on 3 October.
