Admission to the Centre is free and visitors can take advantage of a
licensed fair-trade café bar, regular open mic music sessions,
poetry and comedy evenings - all in the company of experienced
musicians and artists who are more than willing to share their
knowledge!
For just £5 a year, visitors can
also become members of Muddy Promotions. Members can then gain
access to the Glass Onion 'back of house' facilities which will
include a book, film and music library, art and sculpture rooms,
graphic design and film editing suites, a photography dark room, a
relaxing herb garden, band rehearsal rooms and a recording studio
for a community record label called ‘Drip Dry’.
Transforming the pub into The Glass
Onion Music and Arts Community Centre is a project pioneered by
Muddy Promotions, a voluntary not-for-profit organisation
spearheaded by Muneer 'Moony' Hassan, lead singer of Peterborough
band 'Opaque'.
Moony, co-directors Ben Turner,
Stuart and Luke Payn and a band of willing volunteers have worked
tirelessly over the last year to turn the former city pub into a
place where people can participate in creative arts and music
projects and enjoy live music, poetry and theatre in a comfortable
and atmospheric environment.
Says Moony: "Before the Glass Onion,
there was nowhere in Peterborough where people could develop the
creative side of their nature without spending lots of money. Based
in the heart of the city, the new Centre provides a place for anyone
interested in music and art to develop their talents - from
recording and marketing their own CDs to designing jewellery,
painting pictures and sculpture. We especially hope Peterborough's
young people will use the Centre to get their feet on the first rung
of the ladder and take a positive first step towards achieving their
dreams.
"We currently receive no funding and
have established the Centre using our own money, effort and sheer
determination. I'm immensely proud of and grateful to everyone who's
been involved in bringing the Centre alive."
The Glass Onion Music and Arts
Community Centre will be open for business from 10am to 12 midnight
weekdays and from 12 noon to 1am at weekends.
