In 2008, more than 37,000 people attended the Peterborough
Festival and a further 2,500 took part in its many events and
performances. Organisers are currently putting the finishing touches
to this year's line up, and are calling on local performers,
community groups and schools to get involved.
Commencing with the traditional
Mayor’s Festival Parade, which will work its way from Bridge Street
to Central Park, the festival will celebrate all that is great about
Peterborough.
Councillor Matthew Lee, cabinet
member for community services, said: "The Peterborough Festival has
a reputation for providing great entertainment, showcasing local
talent and uniting communities.
"This year's festival is now only
two months away, and I am greatly looking forward to it."
The opening weekend, on Saturday 20
June and Sunday 21 June 2009, will feature a packed weekend of
family entertainment in Central Park. The main stage will feature
both local and national acts. There will be exciting displays of
talent and many different activities for people of all ages to take
part in. Saturday evening’s entertainment includes big band swing,
international special guests and a very special top of the bill act,
which will be revealed nearer to the time. The highlight on Sunday
evening is a concert by the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra,
featuring a special guest conductor.
The weekend of 27 and 28 June 2009
will see the action move to the city centre, where the city’s
heritage will be celebrated. Visitors to the grounds of Peterborough
Cathedral will be taken on a journey back in time to meet Romans and
Saxons and learn about city life hundreds of years ago. There will
also be a Viking longboat in Bridge Street.
The final weekend will see a craft
fair and farmers’ market held on the Embankment, and the popular
Peterborough Boat Festival will see hundreds of
beautifully-decorated crafts moored on the River Nene.
Throughout the festival, the Mask
Theatre group will be giving performances in Central Park, and
students from Peterborough Regional College will demonstrate their
drama skills at Peterborough Museum.
As the launch draws closer, it is
expected that further acts and activities will be added to the
schedule. A full programme of events will be published in the next
few weeks.
Dave King, festival and events
manager for Peterborough City Council, said: “We are determined to
ensure there is something for everyone at this year’s Peterborough
Festival. The opening weekend is just around the corner, but there
is still time for local performers, community groups and schools to
get involved and I would be delighted to hear from them.”
