During the last two decades, Corgi has been responsible for issuing
certifications and making sure homes that used natural gas met local
safety codes. The Corgi Company will cease its reign over gas
standards on 1st April 2009 and the Capita Company will take over as
the standards monitor for the office of the Health & Safety
Executive (HSE).
For the most part, the day to day
operations of the gas industry will remain much as they were before
the switch. Corgi will continue to be in charge and certifications
and gas regulations will not change until the end of business on
31st March 2009. As of the start of business on 1st April 2009,
Capita will take over for the inspections and regulation of the
nation's Gas Engineers.
If you have natural gas, you do not
have to worry about whether or not you will still be protected once
Corgi officially steps down and Capita steps up. It has been made
apparent by the HSE office that Capita's takeover is largely because
the company proved that it would work harder to ensure that
consumers of natural gas would be well educated about safety and the
concerns involved with their consumption of natural gas.
The change for Consumers is expected
to be minimal. Eileen Le Voi, Managing Director of our local
trustourtrades.com says that “The Corgi Logo has been synonymous
with Gas Installers for over 17 years and the change of companies
will help address the problem of “cowboys” and illegal gas workers
as they will now have no choice but to register with the new scheme.
"From
Wednesday 1st April, all Corgi logos on legal gas installers work
vehicles will be replaced by the new Gas Safe Register logo as shown
above. They will also carry new ID cards which displays this new
logo. We advise you to always check if a gas installer is registered
with the Gas Safe Register by asking to see their ID card to check
the person is who they say they are and that the picture matches.
This proves they are technically competent and comply with safety
standards."
"The
things you need to check on the Gas Safe Register card are that the
name of the person and the business are correct, the card hasn't
expired and on the back of the card, that they are registered to do
the work you require. It's extremely important to note that Gas Safe
Register registration doesn't cover all areas of gas work so you
need to find the Gas Safe registered installer that's right for you,
for example, qualified in servicing a boiler, or fitting a gas
cooker – this will be displayed on the back of the card."
A significant amount of work carried
out by illegal gas workers has been found to have serious safety
defects so do not take any chances.
Finding a Registered Installer
trustourtrades.com takes the stress out of finding a local
registered gas installer because they do all the checks on your
behalf, ensuring that all members under the Pluming & Heating
category are registered under the new scheme. Eileen says “from the
1st April 2009, you should look for the new “Gas Safe Register”
brand and be aware that the traditional “Corgi” logo will then be
redundant”.
For your peace of mind and safety,
