Wines for spring that don't break the bank

Lifestyle | Article

With the weather warming up and the evenings getting lighter you’ll soon be itching to get out into the sunshine.

This week, why not give these fresh whites a go as you catch some spring rays over lunch or in the garden at the weekend.

We’re convinced you’ll love the fruity and aromatic Alsace Pinot Grigio 2007, £7.49 at M&S. It has a juicy, enticing flavour of green apples and peaches and a ripe, rounded but dry finish. Opulent and clean. Perfect for sociable get-togethers!

New Zealand’s fresh and lively Nobilo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, from Sainsbury’s (was £8.15 now £5.43), is the ideal choice for a Spring aperitif. Coming from the coast of the beautiful south island, it shows a distinctive bouquet of tropical and citrus fruit, gooseberry and passion fruit. Its crisp and zesty characters with a refreshing finish makes it equally enjoyable with other springtime treats such as prawn, pea and mint risotto, chicken Caesar salad and any sort of seafood.

The petite, hand-made Dindarello Maculan 2006 37.5cl, £9.49 from Oddbins will have you dreaming of those up-coming summer days in no time. A world-class dessert wine made in the passito style by a leading family owned Italian, Veneto winery. The half bottle size makes it ideal to finish off a dinner party or simply to sip on your own. It’s fruity, seductively sweet, and has a ravishing floral perfume with a balancing citrus vibrancy.

And finally, say ‘Hello Spring’ with the Cuvée de la Chevalerie Méthode Traditionnelle, £9.99 available at Nicolas. This supple and fruity cuvée is ideally served at 8ºC and goes brilliantly with white meat, grilled fish and fruit pies. What better way to put a spring in your step!
