Full steam ahead for festival’s opening weekend flotilla

Boat Festival 24-25 June

Peterborough City Council’s arts team is hoping for another record breaking flotilla when boat owners from around the country descend on the city for the opening weekend of the ‘Global Summer’ Peterborough Festival.

Last year’s Boat Festival saw more than 120 narrow boats and cabin cruisers moored alongside the River Nene Embankment in what was the largest gathering of boats on Britain’s inland waterways during 2005.

This impressive spectacle will once again return to the Embankment on Saturday 24 June and Sunday 25 June to celebrate the culture of the waterways

Councillor Matthew Lee, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet member for Community Services, said: “I’ll be mooring up my boat alongside the scores of other boats expected this weekend and looking forward to one of the festival’s more sedate events. There will be a whole host of activities, competitions and a spectacular array of boats to ensure everyone, from complete novices to boat enthusiasts, has a great family day out.”

A range of activities are planned for the two-day event with trade stands and rural crafts complementing the scores of boats moored along the Embankment. There will be a special ‘Peterborough Boat Festival by Night’ event on Saturday evening at 7 pm, with boats being illuminated and decorated for the occasion. While on Sunday at 11 am there will be a boat blessing service accompanied by the Deacon’s School Junior Concert Band and further attractions, including a working river boat forge.

Robert Mason, who is organising the Boat Festival, said: “It really is an excellent opportunity for people to learn more about living on the waterways. We have 82 boats already booked for the event and are expecting to exceed last year’s attendance.”

Organised by Peterborough City Council, the ‘Global Summer’ festival will take place from Saturday June 24 to Sunday 2 July. The opening weekend will focus on events at the Embankment while Central Park will be the principal venue for the second weekend.

Further details of what’s on and where to go are available on Peterborough City Council’s website and from Peterborough Festival brochures available from several outlets across the city, including the Tourist Information Centre and the Town Hall.
