Chill out this summer at Peterborough museum

Lifestyle | Article

Visitors to Peterborough Museum are guaranteed a frosty reception when it welcomes a special event called ‘Antarctic Explorers’, with re-enactors and real live husky dogs, for the bank holiday weekend of Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 25, 26 and 27 August.

The event ties in with the museum’s successful Titanic exhibition and there will be a range of activities for all the family, including fun crafts, a Titanic fun pack and a trail around the museum.

There will also be re-enactors re-creating Scott’s famous race to the Antarctic of 1912, who will recall the hardships endured by the explorers, including how they went to the toilet in freezing temperatures.

However, the star attraction during the three-day event is guaranteed to be the husky dogs. Each day from 1 pm to 3 pm, visitors will have the opportunity to meet two dogs, and learn all about these hardy and amazing animals from their owner.

"It might seem unusual to be holding a polar-themed event at the end of August. However, Scott’s ill-fated mission to the South Pole happened at around the same time as the sinking of the Titanic,” said Jo Robinson, visitor services team leader for Peterborough City Council’s museum. “We hope visitors will enjoy meeting the re-enactors, who use props and equipment featured in the TV film ‘Shackleton’ starring Kenneth Branagh. It will also be great fun for visitors to meet and learn about huskies – they really are very special dogs.”

The ‘Chill Out This Summer’ event will be at Peterborough Museum on Priestgate, on Saturday 25 August, from 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday 26 August, from 12 noon to 4 pm, and Monday 27 August, from 12 noon to 4 pm. Entry is free of charge, but donations are welcome.
