Is there a number you can ring to stop these infernal automated cold calls?

I remember last time I had a land-line, they put a number out on TV, which freed me from the scourge of morons trying to sell me stuff in my own living room. At least you could sometimes have a bit of a chat and a joke with those people though. But now it's like being dragged through the house to take a personal call from Heart FM's Ads from Hell. I've got a private number and I'm not keen to change it, but I think it may have been registered to some-one else in the recent past.

Although, a lot of the cold-callers don't give a monkeys about the rules and it's very difficult to enforce.
You can always ask (tell) them to remove your phone number from their records. Also, you can ask for their company's name and address just in case you need to raise the matter.

However, I think there's very little you can do "effectively".

Thanks Rodders, that is exactly what I was looking for and I've just registered. To tell you the truth, I've never listened to any of these annoying transatlantic accent sales messages to find out who they are or what they're about, although the word 'loan' seems to come up more often than not.

I know last time I registered it was an instant improvement.

V interesting website, Rodders, & I recommend everybody takes a look. It's a service/organisation of which I knew nothing before. There's also stuff about direct mail, which tends to get the hackles up of most people.

Included is a list of "list cleaners" - I counted more than 30 individual companies. Does anyone know about / have experience of same?
