That's why no one uses them, not even in Scotland.

I'll take Scottish note off your hands and quite happily spend these 'Non' legal tender notes.

Just drop them off at my studios or the shop.

Thanks.

[QUOTE=Halfaperson]

I come from Scotland and when i'm down here and paying with a Scottish note i always say "sorry, its a Scottish note" and that normally does the trick.

You get the odd Scottish Nationalist (and they are all very odd) ranting about this subject, but i'm quite sure the very same people would query a Bank Of Ulster note

I won't be apologising for having a Scottish note and you'r right these same ignorant people who have never been as far as the end of their nose would have a problem with Ulster notes - not that I care about that!!!

As was said in an earlier post - a Jock £20 note isn't even legal tender in England, so why should you expect to spend them here ?

If they weren't really legal tender then they wouldn't be accepted.

Pete, legal tender means they don't have to be accepted. For instance if someone owed you £1,000 and tried paying with notes from the Bank of Ulster you could refuse it and take them to court for non-payment.

While Scottish/NI etc sterling notes retain their value you are only legally obliged to accept English banknotes as legal tender in England and Wales.

Of course if someone owed me a grand providing i had one of those ultra violet things I'd take anything, even a £100 note from the Clydesdale Bank with a picture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh on it!

If I offered to pay my petrol bill with cheese and it was accepted then that becomes legal tender.

The fact that shops take Scottish notes makes tham legal tender.
