Ian you come up with
one very important piece of information and then you
completely let yourself down with the remarks about the
Take That Tribute band. By doing this you've put yourself
into the same catagory of the very people you have moaned
about before - ie the 'Its only s**t bands that come to
Peterborough brigade'.

i don't agree with this; my slant was more aimed at
the fact there's a Take That tribute act in the first
place.... not to mention the hysteria and reverence
placed on what's basically a bunch of minimum wage
dancers in stark contrast to the inevitably
nonchalent reaction to the news of what I'll be PM'ing
you about shortly...  in political terms, Peterborough is
sadly, a Heart FM safe seat. Just look at the JLS
pollution of their playlist for instance.... no doubt kev
lawrence will be spewing about the Take Fake act in his
weekly 'column'  in the ET... ask anyone not from the
city about it's musical legcy, and you'll always get the
stock answer of JLS and some bloke once in the Prodigy...
they've even forgotten about Andy Bell.

Totally agree - that's the way it is, that's what the
majority are into - its got nothing to with bus times or
the price of fish.

This is why the Cressett is doomed.

Some towns do, some towns don't.

Cambridge is a town that has a demand for the
arts/culture - Stevenage on the other hand doesn't.

There will always be a minority that opposes the general
rule, there will always be people that disagree

I think you'll find that there's a Heart FM in Cambridge
too- with exactly the same playlist as Heart FM
Peterborough ( and I was reliably informed by a person
'in the know' that the stations might be even closer
linked together quite soon....)
Heart Peterborough will course be playing JLS records at
the moment - they're promoting them on the Embankment in
6 weeks time and there's still tickets left and it also
might be part of the deal that the station has to play
new releases by the band. I wish I could get tracks
played by the artistes I promote on the radio. The DJ's
at The Met play tracks by bands we've got coming - same
thing in a smaller way - its called 'promoting' and in
the current climate you need to try to cover every angle
to make people aware and to sell tickets.
Tribute bands are doing very good business around the
country at the moment - you may have a personal dislike
to some of them or the idea of being a parody to the real
thing but if they sell tickets then obviously there's a
demand - likewise I can't understand the appeal of soaps
on TV but 13 million people watch them so I have to
accept that my view is a minority.
And if you're a venue looking to survive at the moment
and a promoter wants to put on a tribute act and take the
financial gamble then why say no? - if somebody wanted to
hire The Met on a Thursday and put on a Robbie Williams
tribute band then I'm not going to say no. Certainly
would'nt be a tribute act that I'd back but if somebody
else thinks they can make it work then fair play to them.

And getting back to the original point about buses, I've
spoken to the lady in charge of nightime ecomony at PCC-
she has already passed on my email to the company and
we're awaiting a response.

Ian/Simon/Pete - can't you 3 just get together and sort
out your differences over a beer? I'll provide you with a
venue and a table to sit round and I'll be the mediator
if you want!!? - this was a decent conversational thread
with some very good points and suggestions but
.............along come the usual 'forum' police with
jibes that we've all heard / read many times before.
I've asked the person at PCC to read this thread to see
the points raised - when she gets to pages 6/7/8 and sees
the petty arguing between 3 blokes that should know
better then she's really going to be impressed.
As Dazz the drummer says its 'off topic' so why not just
go back and remove the comments that are 'off topic'?

Hopefully I've done just that and removed the off topic posts - Jenny

I suspect that the demand for gigs at the cresset is far
out weighed by the cost of keeping it open.

Does anyone know: -

a, how much it costs to hire the place to put on a gig?
&
b, what the maximum capacity is?

a/ Depends on what you need but hire fee for hall is around
£800 + security as needed + pa + barrier if required + PRS
+ VAT

b/ 1100 for standing / 850 for seated

..so it could cost a band the best part of £5k to hire it
(for a big production band) all in.

If you charged £12 a ticket you'd make £8K profit - i'm
not sure that would be attractive enough to a serious
touring band (that would also have its own daily costs on
top).

Dazza
Realistically to put a show on at The Cresset costs about
£2.5/£3 depending on the bands requirements BUT on top of
this you have to guarantee the band a fee - so that
regardless of who turns up then you're paying them this
money. However, this money is a guarantee AGAINST sales.
so,lets just say.
1100 people at £12 a ticket = £13200
Less   VAT   = £11234 net
Set up costs at Cresset = £2500
+ Band   rider £ 500
+ Promoting   £1000
+   supports   £ 250
Total costs   £4250
so taking one from the other leaves you £6984 in the pot.
You would guarantee the band say £4500 against 80/20
after costs. So if nobody came you're paying the band
£4500 but if the show sold out then you're paying them
80% of £6984 = £5587.20 and you're making 20% = £1396 on
a sell out show but in reality you're risking the costs
and the guarantee ie £8750 so if no one came you'd loose
that much or in essence you need to sell 856 tickets to
simply break even.
And thats on a good deal - sometimes its 85/15 or even
90/10

I thought the venue was responsible for licensing themselves and all royalites due are covered in this license payment?  Bit rich to pass that cost on.... pubs don't charge punters to watch big screen football, why should venues pass on the cost of a neccesity for them to allow you to put events on there?

They're  interesting figures met. Look at it from the band management point and you add in merchandising and cd sales etc. Of course the only real winner is the venue.
