I've travelled down to see Symptom and the Lloyd Watson Band play at the Fayrespot Cresset Bar. And both gigs and the atmosphere have been brilliant!

The Fayrespot & Goodly is a GREAT place to play. You're a few feet above the audience and there's a glass-topped barricade to fend off most of the flying beer mugs.

'Years ago when the two moan venues for bands were the Cresset and the Wirrina I used to much prefer the Wirrina. I can remember not mattering where you were in the Wirrina, wehter you were at the back in easy access to the bar or in the front "moshing" it up, the sound was always great.

I used to find the Cresset pretty p**** poor venue. I distinctly remember seeing Gaye Bykers On Acid at the Cresset, who I was a big fan of at the time, and left halfway through, they sounded abysmal.

In my view, unless improvements have been made, they should resurrect the Wirinna as a venue and forget about the cresset.'

Trust me, having promoted at both venues then The Cresset is much much much better than The Wirrina in every department from a band/production/show point of view.

The one thing in the Wirrinas favour is/was its location - but in those days people thought nothing of walking from the old bus station to the wirrina - a walk of some 400 yards. These days people seem to not walk more than 40 yards from one venue to another.

I'm not originally from Peterborough, I've been gigging
for 20+ years and I have to say, Peterborough gigs are
the hardest i've ever played!

It's as if people don't really want live music here, the
landlords seem to book us 'just incase' people change
their minds and we're assured that each gig is going to
be 'heaving' but end up playing to ten or less people.

O'neills seems to be ok, packed out every gig so far, but
recently we've played Ebenezers, The Fayre spot, The
Cross Keys, The New England club, The Bluebell - to
mention a few, and they're all pretty embarrassing.....funny thing is, the landlords always say
"that was great can we book you again" - its weird.

I regularly play in other areas of the country and i've
never experienced anything like it.

I've read about the curse of Suzi Quatro - can it really
be true???

It's called the 'Peterborough effect', Roy Kinnear f**ked it all up for us in the 70's.

The answer to anyone moaning about the lack of a decent mid-sized venue in Peterborough is simple: if you think there is a market for such a venue, and that you can make one work when others have failed, put a business plan together, raise some money and show us how it's done.

I promoted a show at The Junction in Cambirdge last night and if you compared the 2 venues then on several points The Cresset scored above and on other points its scored below but on the key point, ie attendance then The Junction easily won - 523 v 396 for the same act.

And thats the key point that needs to be answered - why does an act do 25% more business in a city of similar size some 30 miles away?. Its nothing to do with Universities as the appeal of the act was to 12-18 year olds.

Were the ticket prices the same Steve ?

Cambridge is far wealthier than Peterborough.

Same ticket price, sane line up,Peterborough on a Wednesday
and Cambridge on a Thursday so no real difference in days
of the week.
Maybe Cambridge is wealthier but we're talking teenagers
and it was only a £10 ticket so not an excessive amount.
AND we spent twice as much advertising here in Peterborough
as we did in Cambridge.
