The ban was imposed to "protect" non-smokers, yet venues
opened explicitly for smoking where no non-smokers are ever
present aren't allowed.

This doesn't make sense.

It's illogical to "protect" non-smokers from smoke in
places where there are no non-smokers.

It's like banning Death Metal to protect Folk fans at a
Six Feet Under concert.

P.S. I've no idea why the Web Wiz Forum software is
inserting line breaks every few words. I'm not doing it
deliberately. I don't think it likes Chrome.

It's quite interesting over time. I haven't smoked for about 20 years, but I remember being very attached to the habit for the 10 years that I did, and I would have been really hacked off with anyone who tried to stop me before I was ready to stop myself. I was quite shocked when the ban was successfully imposed in Ireland, before it started here. Plus I'm a fan of King Kool with his Nanny State stuff and I agree that the enjoyment of tobacco is a civil right.

HOWEVER I have to say, it is nice to breath clean, comfortable, non-stale tasting air while I am out. I'm probably a terrible slut, but I'll quite often go out for a drink and then re-wear the same tops again (if I haven't spilt beer on them) That would have been unheard of in smoking days. Also, I really think that some of the vocalists I listen to, especially females, actually sound better in a smoke free place.

On the down side, I am constantly going in and out in the freezing cold, 'cos all my drinking companions smoke, so I have probably had a worse chest since the ban. Also, I really hate it when I'm just getting into a band and most of the audience all start filing out mid-set, often straight past the stage.

I don't think it will ever be phased out. It's a huge dependency amongst prisoners and people in institutions, especially mental health patients. Look at the way every time the price goes up, the poorest people in society keep chuffing away. They don't even smoke roll-ups half the time. I don't know how they do it.

the ban certainly killed the pub trade that's for sure.

You don't think the rocketing prices on alcohol helped also?
