Running the country and being effective.

Effective at what ?

I suppose effectively running the country into the ground is not incongruent.

My bad

I never made a qualifying remark about the effectiveness of gordo, I was merely questioning why people were having personal pops at him.

Surely there should be plenty of ammo around than to resort to such personal attacks.

Well, Colgrin, you've got to realise that you are in a social minority in that respect. Most people seem to take interest only in the dynamics of a prominent person's relationships with others - ie. gossip and slander. Personally, I've always had a soft spot for GB, ever since I saw the genuine and obvious joy on his face, at the unveiling of that statue of Nelson Mandela, attended by the great man himself.

Maybe it is a fault with me, to be fascinated by this tic kind of thing that he has, but I can't get over the contrast between him and all the image-consultant victims in public life generally. When you consider the amount of money that got handed over to Saatchi & Saatchi (and elecutionists) in order to further Margaret Thatcher's career. And Tony Blair (like David Cameron, strangely) seemed to be all image and no substance.

Elsie, you may be right about that but is there really an underlying issue
there.

Are people interested in gossip and slander about our politicians because
they are interested in gossip and slander rather than politics or is because
there is little else for people to latch on?

Yes there is an underlying issue. I think we are actually entering an era of improved transparency. If politicians are all puppets anyway (which is an easy conclusion to come to if you read this forum) I think there is a lot to be said for favouring the people who we regard as most personable and trustworthy.

Very true Elsie.

I don't think that all politicians are useless, there are many who, regardless
of party, carry out their duties and obligations honourably.

It's just the minority of self-serving numpties who poison the well and give
all the others a bad name, which is pretty unfair.

However it seems that this minority of self-serving numpties are the ones
who seem to be the ones holding all the power!

God help us!

Blip don't try and claim the new frontier revolutionary ground for the 'yoof'!

You sound like Rik off The Young Ones. (Said she, being somewhat ripe in
years!)

Hey Elsie, don't knock the groundswell of the young, along with disillusioned oldsters, for the first time in ages, looking into such real possibilites of change. I would never have thought this even 6 months ago. But there's something in the air, and it's exciting.
