First there were ash clouds, then airline strikes, then bad weather
caused almost every major airport in Britain to close, pretty much
at the same time. Many of this disasters coincided with major
holiday periods such as half terms, and Easter.
But it seems the British are a
hard-willed bunch, either that or they cannot bear to be without
their treasured week in the sun. 2011 looks set to be a good year
for airlines as people take to the skies in search of good value
holidays across the planet.
One downside however will be a rise
in costs. Passenger duty in the UK has just been hiked up yet again.
It’s not by too much, but it will make a difference for families in
particular as a few Pounds really mounts up when five people are
travelling together using one bank account. What’s more, the price
of oil looks set to rise and we all know that airlines pass this on
to their customers. So be warned, finding value for money is still
possible but you might have to search a little harder for it.
New destinations are going to pop
up onto the global mass travel radar. Brazil, for example has been
in the limelight recently as it has won the bid to host the World
Cup in 2014. Along with more flight carriers covering the
destinations bring prices down, it is becoming a far more appealing
long haul destination.
Closer to home, Eastern European
countries that have yet to make a huge impact on the international
market will enjoy some new found fame. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
will hope to follow in the footsteps of the Czech Republic and
Hungary.
But it’s not only the places that
are changing, the way we travel and what we want from our holidays
is also shifting. Adventure travel and activity breaks are proving
to be fun for all the family and educational holidays such as
painting or cookery holidays are also growing in popularity.
