The site first went live in June 1998 taking over as the only website
about Peterborough from the Citygate site which had recently closed at
that time.
The
aim was to build an online community that was about
Peterborough as it is today rather than the city's
past, which has been the main subject matter of site
that had gone before.
It was an uphill task at the
beginning sourcing content when many businesses
didn't even use email. Neither the local newspapers
or council had their own website and there were
fewer Internet users in general.
I remember when we all got very
excited because we hit 500 visitors per month and
has people posting on our message board.
Today Peterborough Community Website the regular
55,000-60,000 visitors to the site view more than
half a million pages each month.
