Planning Applications
Four members of the Society's committee form a Plans Group to comment on planning applications of significance. These are usually, though not always, major proposals. The Society does not comment on proposals whose impact is restricted to immediate neighbours. Where appropriate, written comments are followed up by putting our case in person.
Here are some recent cases:
Station Quarter and Great Northern Hotel. The development brief for the station quarter was published in December 2007. It covers an extensive area on both sides of the main line tracks. Whilst welcoming the continuing evolution of proposals for the regeneration of this major gateway into the city, the society were strongly opposed to several aspects. These included the expectation that the Great Northern Hotel would be demolished, proposals for buildings of excessive height, and lack of attention to the urban design requirements for top quality linkage between the station and the proposed north Westgate development.
