Design Awards

Peterborough continues to change. At the large scale, the Hampton development continues to grow to over 7000 dwellings, and overall housing numbers are planned to increase in line with Peterborough's designation within the London - Stansted - Cambridge - Peterborough corridor. For the city centre, major areas of comprehensive change are planned in the City Centre Master Plan. The quality and vitality of its city centre defines the image of Peterborough for visitors and residents alike. The principal local centres, especially those at Bretton, Orton and Hampton, are the subject of major design and development schemes. They must help the centres to continue to act as attractive focal points for employment, shopping, leisure, education, and travel for major sectors of Peterborough. At the local level there will continue to be proposals for infill development, new buildings and extensions throughout the city. Many of these will be in sensitive locations in Conservation areas, beside listed buildings or in places of landmark significance.

The quality of all this development must be high if the city is to maintain and enhance its role as an Environment City and a major regional centre as well as continuing to be an attractive place to live. The Civic Society is introducing Design Awards to further this aim.
