Activities

Our work has several aspects, and members can consider whether simply to attend the talks and visits or whether to become more fully involved through the work of the committee. Here are some of our current activity areas.

Members' monthly meetings are held during the winter months (November to March) each year with a speaker on a local topic, and at least one special open meeting on a major topic.

Members' summer visits are organised. Recent visits have included tours of Thorney village and Lyvedon New Bield.

Chairman's Evening. The Society means to ensure that this annual event is a – "not to be missed” occasion for all those involved in Peterborough's business, environment and cultural life. Recent speakers have included Professor John Bridge on the Peterborough Urban Regeneration Company (now Opportunity Peterborough), and Lady Victoria Leatham on Burghley House.

Commenting on planning applications. Our Planning Sub-group monitors planning applications and makes representations, whether positive or otherwise, on those of significance to the Society's aims. It does not comment on applications whose impact is restricted to immediate neighbours.

City Council liaison. The Society is taken seriously by the City Council and liaison meetings with senior officers and members are held every six months to take forward a range of issues of mutual concern.

City Centre Planning. The Society has participated vigorously in consultations on this vitally important scheme to remodel several major parts of the City Centre.

City Centre Forum. The Society is represented on this Forum which oversees the development of City Centre Management Initiatives.

Cathedral Views. Maintaining views of Peterborough Cathedral is an important planning constraint. The Society has worked with the City Council to produce a study of views that need protection through appropriate policies in its Local Development Documents (LDDs)

Civic Society Design Awards. Every other year the society will promote and organise awards for design excellence in the Peterborough area.

Village Audits. The Society's members have worked with Peterborough Environment City Trust (listed on links page) and Parish Councils to produce village assessments. These will be developed into Village Design Statements and adopted in due course as Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) by the local authority.

RAF Peterborough DVD. The Society has commissioned a dvd on the history of RAF Peterborough (Westwood) and an associated teachers' pack.

Public clocks. The Society sustains an interest in ensuring that the City's public clocks are maintained.

Postcards. The Society has produced a series of eight postcards of Peterborough. Copies are still available
