Willow Festival 2002 achieving international recognition

The popular Willow Festival will once again be part of the two-week long Peterborough Festival.

The Willow Festival, which is approaching its fifth year, now has regional, national and international recognition. It will take place on the 12th/13th/14th July 2002 and will be the culmination of the city's celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee, incorporating a special concert and family firework display on the final evening.

This year, due to it's phenomenal growth a committee has been formed to specifically concentrate on the organisation of the Willow Festival.

The committee is headed by Mark Ringer, who runs local rehearsal studios and has played the leading role in organising the event in previous years, supported by a team of organisers.

Mark Ringer commented, "The Willow Festival is becoming more and more popular each year. In the past years we have had enquiries from more than 600 bands for the 120 available slots. We are now named on the UK Festival Circuit and getting enquiries from international acts".

He continued, "Our aim is to create a showcase for local bands, bring new music into the area while creating a major attraction for the city".

Support from local businesses is needed to ensure success of the event and local company Jenny Weston Promotions Ltd has been appointed to facilitate sponsorship for the event.

Jenny Weston said, "We are delighted to be associated with the Willow Festival, and are looking forward to working with Mark and the team."

Mark Ringer added, "Sponsorship of this event is an excellent opportunity for any organisation to achieve a huge profile both locally, regionally and nationally. The quality of the groups performing is now at the highest level and already we are inundated with calls from local bands to play".

The 2002 event will once again be supported and organised in conjunction with Peterborough City Council.

Peter Newman, Principal Cultural Services Officer for Peterborough City Council said: "The Willow Festival is a great way in which to end the Peterborough Festival and for the last 4 years it has been attracting more attention from across not only the region but the country. The City Council are really pleased to be working with the new Willow Festival Committee on what is sure to see another major success by attracting greater media coverage and an increase in attendance levels. The Willow Festival creates a great opportunity for local bands to perform alongside regionally and nationally recognised artists as well as showing that Peterborough is the place to be in the Eastern Region for good live music."
