Drawing the maps from aerial photography rather than using Ordnance
Survey data, every street, footpath, cycleway, bridleway and
footpath link have been audited by the team to check for accuracy.
Toria discovered that an awful lot
of Ordnance Survey data was wrong, especially when it came to
footpaths and cycleways. The Ordnance Survey data for footpaths used
on maps sold in shops today is from data collected in 1901, and new
or diverted paths have rarely been updated by Ordnance Survey since.
Based in Peterborough, Toria Leeds
is now in the process of launching the first Cycle Maps UK product,
in time for the Easter holidays with an informative cycle and
walking of the Green Wheel. Proficient cyclists will be able to get
more enjoyment from this popular pastime by investing in either a
leisure orientated Green Wheel Map or an Urban A to Z booklet that
will be coming out later in the year. Urban booklet maps will have
more information on with an A to Z section and local amenities
included.
A great deal of thought has gone in
to the compilation of each; the Leisure maps include all the cycle
routes, public and permissive footpaths, bridleways, byways, roads,
pedestrian routes and information about local attractions, picnic
sites, pubs, toilets, café’s and where the nearest rural shop is and
whether there is an ATM or cash back facilities there, etc. There is
everything you need to know when planning a challenging cycle ride
or a leisurely family trip at the weekend. The map and booklet also
encourage people to make more of their local environment, support
rural communities, and stay safe whilst keeping fit.
The Cycle Training People, a
division of Cycle Maps UK, offers courses for beginners off road,
and intermediate, and advanced cyclists on the road. Fully trained
CRB checked instructors are on hand to help build confidence and
ability, no matter what your current level is a syllabus is taught
and there is a choice of joining a course or having an individual
lesson to suit an individual’s particular needs.
New this month is the launch of
Cycle Post, a new green cycle courier service. The first in
Peterborough. With very competitive rates and the opportunity for
organisations to offset some of their carbon footprint. This service
will be available from the 14 February 2009.
