The East of England Agricultural Society – owner of the East of England Showground in Peterborough, (Cambridgeshire) has unveiled a £7m development plan set to confirm the 250-acre site as the Eastern region’s fastest developing events venue.

The project, which is due to commence October 2006, will see the construction of a clear span Exhibition Centre and Atrium, covering 5,583m2, which linked to existing facilities, will give a total covered exhibition area of over 14,000m2. Coupled with over 125 acres of outdoor space, the development will offer a flexible solution to organisers of almost any kind of event, indoors or out.

Andrew Mercer, Chief Executive of the East of England Agricultural Society said, ‘This is an extremely exciting period for the Society, which sees the largest development ever to be made on the Showground. Demand led from major, third party events already held at the Showground, the project is seen as a positive step forward. Enabling facilities to be used all year round, which will ultimately enhance the experience of the Showground’s already 800,000 annual visitors, we hope to attract a mixture of premium trade and retail events to the area.’

Andrew Mercer went on to say, ‘The Society, as the organiser of seven major events and through the development of a highly skilled event management and ground force team, will also be able to broaden its current portfolio, whilst creating a stronger platform from which to promote other activities in which it is involved; namely that of British agriculture and the Society’s highly acclaimed local food sourcing policy – Food Direct from the Farm.’

The project is scheduled for completion in July 2007 and will also include the provision of an all weather car park for 2,000 cars, alongside existing parking for up to 20,000 cars. The East of England Showground is located just off the A1 in Peterborough and is serviced by a network of motorways, making it easily accessible from all major routes, is only 50 minutes by train from Kings Cross and is a level site ideally suited to the less mobile.
