Local safety expert returns to his roots

Peterborough-based safety expert Geoff Barber - proprietor of Safety Plan Services - has returned to his business roots with a visit to the Peterborough Enterprise Programme (PEP).

It was with help and advice from PEP that Geoff set up Safety Plan Services in 1995. He came back to brief the organisation on his latest business success - independent accreditation of his work to the latest National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level 4 safety standards set by the City & Guilds of London Institute.

Geoff, who is also a corporate member of the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health, told PEP director Paul Child:

"Getting this qualification has involved a great deal of study, research and hard work - but it means we can demonstrate beyond doubt that Safety Plan Services has the proven competence to provide workplace health and safety advice to any business."

Winning this accreditation from the BCS College in Nottingham involved research, production of a one hour video and commentary on the operation of a successful safety culture, writing six 'domain knowledge' reports, and submitting nearly 500 pages of current work to satisfy a series of demanding
criteria relating to real-life safety work in practice.

Geoff said: "Health and safety is an increasingly important issue for businesses , particularly small to medium sized firms. There is not just the human cost of getting things wrong but the increasingly severe penalties for breaching health and safety legislation.

"Qualified professional advice is vital to ensure that a firm can exercise proper management of health and safety in the workplace for its employees. Our qualifications will provide customers with the confidence that we can provide the best possible health and safety policies & assessments, personal
advice and recommendations fine-tuned to suit their business needs."

Much of Geoff's work traditionally comes from the construction industry where there is a statutory requirement to work with building designers to build safety into the construction process, write a health and safety plan and 'vet' the builder before work starts.

Safety Plan Services has now built a large customer base and many clients come back with repeat business on buildings projects. The firm's many Health & Safety Policy customers benefit from long-term retained relationships by subscribing to its low-cost Helpline advice and Hotline
emergency services which provide access to the company's extensive Safety Library.

PEP's Paul Child said: "It was great to see Geoff and hear how well he is doing. We are involved with the launch of many new businesses and this sort of feedback, showing that we helped people set off in the right direction, is always very encouraging."
