New Funds for Green Business Project

Small and medium sized companies in Peterborough will benefit from a grant of 13,000 that has been awarded to Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) to further expand its successful Business and Environment Management Scheme throughout the region.

The 30,000 project has attracted over 110 member companies since it was launched in June 1999 and has been contributing to efforts to minimise the environmental impacts of local businesses.

The Environmental Action Fund grant, provided by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), will allow PECT to deliver an extensive programme of business support, training, site visits and workshops and promote sound environmental practice to small businesses via a newsletter and a series of case studies.

Richard Donoyou, managing director of PECT said; "Many small businesses don't realise that environmental management offers a significant business opportunity. We are thrilled that this grant will allow us to further demonstrate that taking simple steps to protect the environment can help to save money and increase competitiveness."

The groundbreaking PECT Business and Environment Scheme is unique in the UK, offering an innovative CD-ROM environmental management system designed by small businesses for small businesses. Following its initial success in Peterborough, the scheme is now available across Eastern England. Each registration includes an environmental policy and participants have the opportunity to earn an accreditation on completion of a 12-month cycle of environmental improvement.

Companies interesting in learning more about the scheme and the business benefits of environmental management should contact the Business & Environment Team co-ordinator Antony Gough, details below.
