New Baby Megastore - Fire Safety Contract

Business | Press | News

Driving into Peterborough from the west, you cannot fail to see the enormous, new Kiddicare showrooms conveniently situated alongside the Fletton Parkway.

This impressive, brand new, 160,000 sq ft facility combines both a three-storey megastore and a warehouse which holds high bay racking giving 16,000 pallet locations, serving both the showroom and the booming online store.

Completed in April 2008, the construction took 18 months to build, making it the largest independent baby products and accessories supplier in the UK. During the last 12 months there were more than 500,000 customers.

The warehouse holds over 4000 lines of stock, from nappies and pushchairs to complete nursery furniture suites. A high tech, multi-story conveyor system is used to transport the items either to dispatch or to the customer collect area of the store. Over 120 fire extinguishers were needed for the new facility plus fire safety signage, smoke detectors and fire alarms, all supplied by Newflame. The building was constructed with a compartmentalised fire sprinkler system throughout.

In common with Newflame, Kiddicare is very much a family concern. Started by Neville and Marilyn Wright in 1974, the business has already relocated twice to larger premises in Werrington. Both daughters Elaine and Joanne and son-in-law Scott are now also partners in the business. It now employs approximately 100 full time staff, and is a major employer in Peterborough.

A gym has been incorporated for staff to use before or after work or at the weekends. There is also a photographic studio where, in addition to baby portraits, the staff make videos to show customers how to assemble and operate the baby equipment they have just bought. This way the customers can access Kiddicare's impressive website and be reminded how to assemble/use the equipment when they get it home. Finally there is a customer restaurant complete with play area, named Arthur’s Lounge, after the founder’s inspirational father, where refreshments can be purchased and enjoyed in comfort.

Steve Best observed ‘We have seen Kiddicare really flourish from the mid 1980’s onwards and have built strong relationship with the owners, we are now working closely with Jerry Barry, who was appointed Facilities Manager several months ago’. Jerry Barry responded, “I had already worked with Newflame at my previous company. I knew they would be the best for Kiddicare because of their professionalism and reliability. I was delighted to bring them on board for some additional work, as well as utilising them for the maintenance of the existing systems they have already installed.’
