Direct mail company predicts bright future for industry

Peterborough-based direct mail company, Mailtech UK, predicts a bright future for the direct mail industry, despite the growth of e-mail and the Internet.

Reporting on a year of continued growth at Mailtech director Andrew Whittaker says: “Rather than being in decline, the direct mail industry is going from strength to strength. Direct mail is frequently being used alongside the new internet media in large advertising campaigns.

“Mailtech has never been busier and local companies are playing a large part in our continuing success.”

According to the recently-published 2000 Direct Mail Trends Survey from the Direct Mail Information Service, volumes have increased by 100 per cent over the past two years. In 1999 a staggering 4,345 million items were mailed, of which three quarters went to consumers.

Andrew Whittaker says: “Many of the mailings we send out on behalf of our clients go direct to the consumer and we are seeing increasing levels of creativity as consumers become more and more sophisticated.”

The 2000 Direct Mail survey shows that expenditure on direct mail has increased by 147 per cent over the past two years to a whopping £1,976m in 1999. Every year more than £29 billion worth of business is generated by the direct mail industry and direct mail now commands more than 12.4 per cent of total advertising revenue, showing that more and more companies are seeing the benefits of this highly effective medium.
