Urban regeneration company will spearhead new era of dynamic growth

Business | Press | News

A newly appointed Urban Regeneration Company (URC) will spearhead an exciting new era of dynamic growth for Peterborough, says Gloria Milne, chief executive of Greater Peterborough Investment Agency (GPIA).

Welcoming announcement on Wednesday 2 March, by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), Mrs Milne said: “Peterborough has great potential for significant growth that will fuel the city’s economic development for existing residents and for future generations. The new URC will combine the essential strengths of public and private sector leadership to convert our vision into reality.”

The URC will now assume responsibility for encouraging inward investment and business relocations to Peterborough and GPIA will therefore cease to function after the end of March. However, Mrs Milne believes the URC is the best vehicle for the continued promotion of Peterborough.

“GPIA and its predecessor agencies have helped bring millions of pounds of new investment, hundreds of new businesses and thousands of new career opportunities to Peterborough since 1988,” she said.

“The URC, in partnership with Peterborough City Council, will have a much wider remit for managing Peterborough’s medium-term growth, covering things such as city centre developments, new housing and job creation. It is sensible to combine inward investment activities with all these other economic growth responsibilities.

“Several studies over recent years have highlighted Peterborough’s potential to absorb and support further substantial growth to become a regional centre spanning the border between the East of England and the East Midlands.

“The URC can now work to bring that potential to reality. In the process, Peterborough can aim to expand its high-skilled job opportunities, its higher and further education facilities and its shopping, leisure and cultural amenities. The appointment of a URC is like firing a starting pistol for Peterborough’s new surge of growth.

“I am extremely grateful for the unstinting support of the GPIA team and our partners among local authority members and officers and local business leaders during the 14 years that I have been with GPIA. I also want to wish individual members of the GPIA team every success as they take up new roles with the council, the URC and other organisations.”
